Here is an example from the Zotero webpage. I came across Zotero, which is a open source software and its been a good experience so far form a notetaking and research gathering perspective. I also do a lot of research for specific topics and for that I need a mechanism to collect my research and index it and add notes and make it searchable. There have been instances where I need to revisit some topics and as usual the general tendency is to search and explore further. My main focus in on reading the daily news and covering topics that help me do my job better. I have decided to use the following tools and for the next month I am going to assess whether this has increased my productivity or bought some measurable reduction in the number of tabs across my browsers. Your attention is at a premium and unless you consciously plan to prioritize that attention you are like that kind in a candy store. The general tendency to keep opening topics of interest in multiple tabs gives you a sense of satisfaction that you will have a plethora of news to consume. I read across 2 devices primarily, my mobile and laptop and I wanted to once and for all get rid of my guilt associated with periodic tabs destruction. You think you are efficient with multi-tasking but whatever books I have read and multiple research studies online indicates that multi-tasking is a poor implementation to productivity and is a time sharing algorithm that is not applicable to humans. The bookmarks and the tabs remain in a state of stasis, constantly reminding me of my attention deficit. Its become a chore to manage them and the resulting tab proliferation renders my machine in a state of persistent memory exhaustion.īookmarking tabs for future reading does not solve the problem. This makes sense, but it would be nice if it was configurable in some fashion. One of my intentional resolution for this year is a dramatic reduction in the number of tabs I have open at any given point of time across my multiple browsers. The only catch with this Instapaper + Readwise combo is that Readwise only scrapes Instapaper once or twice a day, and then exports to Evernote once per day. So ultimately, I'm getting the best of both worlds now One Catch What I brought with me this time though, was Readwise, which seems to have solved the text problem in whatever fashion they do. until I realized Pocket doesn't support notes, only highlights. So I gave that a shot and it worked perfectly. I sent an email to support and confirmed this.įortunately, Readwise can do exactly this (even though it's yet another service). You can display them all, but not actually export them. There appears to be no way to export all the highlights for an article in a sane fashion. At first it was nice, but then I noticed a problem. So I fired up Pocket, which does have a support app on the Amazon Appstore, and went to town. Very strange, and immediately on my list to de-friction. Fire tablets are a lot easier to sideload these days than they used to be, but even then the app detected the OS wasn't well supported, and the highlighting would occasionally come out with the text all mixed together. The big challenge came when I bought a second tablet (a Kindle Fire 10) to read on, because I got supremely frustrated trying to type notes on my Kindle. It's got great colors and the export all highlights in an article function worked well. It's simple, clean, easy to highlight and take notes on. sure?Īll my impressions of Instapaper were (and still are) great. Recommendations First: Instapaperīefore I'd even switched from org mode to Evernote, I saw Instapaper was the blessed default in the example library. I've ended up bouncing back and forth between them, and I wanted to document why. I'd put stuff in pocket for years (even before it was baked into Firefox), and I still had an old Instapaper account with some articles I'd saved in 2007. When I started the BASB course, I had no strong preference for which read-it-later app to use.
